ALL CPAs Intern Spotlight of Marlene Rodrigues – Suffolk University

1. Hi Marlene, can you tell us a little about yourself? Where did you grow up and attend school?

Well, I was born in Praia, Cape Verde and I moved to the U.S when I was 13 and have lived in Brockton, MA ever since. I also went to Brockton High, followed by Suffolk University.

2. I see that you have been really involved with community outreach. What have experiences like working with the Margret Fuller House, Saint Francis House, and Massachusetts School on Wheels taught you? Is it important for you to work for an organization that is involved in community outreach?

Absolutely, I’ve always enjoyed being part of something bigger. Being involved with community outreach has taught me that it does, in fact, take a village. I want to live a life of service which is the essence of life. Lending a hand is what causes meaningful changes.

3. As a native Cape Verdean (beautiful country) Creole speaker, how would someone say “Tax Season is Tough” in Creole?

Good one! – Tempo de tax e duro.

4. If not a CPA, what’s another career could you see yourself pursuing?

Teaching. Inspire and educate young people. It’s a very rewarding career.

5. If you could have one superpower would you rather be able to fly, teleport, or read people’s minds? Why?

Teleporting for sure, I could be in Hawaii at 8:59 and still make it to work at 9. I’d go around the world like in the movie Jumper. Take a plunge in the Caribbean Sea, then breakfast in Paris…sunbathe at the top of the Giza Pyramids. Life would be too good.

6. Favorite book, movie or TV show you would recommend?

Criminal Minds is a must binge watch. The plot revolves around an endless supply of serial killers. The characters have great on-screen chemistry and the writers are amazing. My favorite book by the way is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin.

7. Any plans for the spring or summer?

My best friends and I are traveling to Cuba in May to celebrate our 10th year of friendship. But in the summer, I usually just go camping during the weekends in Bellingham.

8. Favorite thing about being an ALL CPAs intern?

Is it bad if I say all the food? Just kidding. I enjoy the fact the I feel like I’m part of the team and everyone has been so kind and welcomed us (the interns) with open arms. Also, people here will find something, anything to talk to you about. I appreciate it.
