ALL in front of the Breakers in the Newport, RI

On Thursday, July 28, ALL traveled to beautiful Newport, RI for the firm’s summer outing. Staff met for breakfast at the firm’s Chestnut Hill office and then it was off to Newport for the day’s adventures.

The first stop was to “The Breakers“, the grandest of the Newport’s mansions, where ALL toured the Vanderbilt’s summer “cottage.”

The staff learned the history of the Breakers and about the lifestyle the Vanderbilt family led during the Gilded Age. Including that the original Breakers was much smaller, but after a fire Cornelius Vanderbilt II commissioned the grandiose mansion that still stands today. Also, the Vanderbilt’s did not have to go far to smell the roses, as over 30 rooms were delivered a fresh bouquet every morning.

Always with accounting on our mind an ALL staff member joked, “Remember they were able to build this because it was before personal income tax came about (The Breakers was completed in 1895 and personal income tax became law in 1913).”

After the tour, the team enjoyed a lunch on the water at the Landing Restaurant on Bowen’s Wharf. The warm weather coupled with a nice ocean breeze created an enjoyable atmosphere to cap off the day and celebrate summer as a firm.
